Intuitive Guidance

A space that comes to life, adapting to the unique needs of each patient. It aligns with their daily routines and shapes itself around their lives, making it easier to manage their condition. Designed specifically for individuals living with dementia, it offers a sense of home, a place where they can feel comfortable and at peace once again, empowering them to navigate daily life with greater independence.

Guiding Shapes

Inner Garden

The garden is the centerpiece of the building, with every room designed around it. Enclosed in glass, it visually connects the entire space and brings a touch of nature indoors, fostering a strong connection to the outside world.

Circular Corridor

The shape was chosen after thorough research to make navigation as simple and intuitive as possible for the residents. The layout eliminates dead ends and sharp corners, creating a smooth, continuous flow. The glass walls also provide visual cues, allowing individuals to orient themselves by looking outside and anchoring their sense of place.

Shapes/Division

The remaining rooms are arranged around the circular centre, allowing for smooth flowing shapes that are tailored to the function of each space.

Anchor Point

Studies have shown that people with dementia connect most easily to their environment through the familiarity of a live-in kitchen. It helps them ground themselves more quickly and better understand their surroundings. For this reason, the kitchen is positioned near the entrance from the hospital and opens directly onto the inner garden. From this central point, the glass walls provide clear sightlines to the rest of the space, enhancing orientation and spatial awareness.

Invisible Glow

Pergola

A custom-made, selfilluminating glass roof covers the terrace. Equipped with motion and light sensors, it adjusts its position in response to the sun, providing optimal lighting throughout the day.

Windows

To support healthy circadian rhythms, all windows are made of smart glass. They increase natural light during the shorter days of winter and reduce light in the late evenings of summer, helping patients maintain a more balanced sleep cycle.

Skylight

Designed to bring in additional natural light and create a visual connection to the sky, to foster a calmer, more relaxed atmosphere.

RAW EDGES

The materials are carefully selected to be all natural and mostly sourced locally, which enhances the sustainability of the project. Most of the materials are neutral, non-reflective, and simple in appearance. However, colored materials are used strategically to color-code each room, providing visual clarity and making it easier for residents to navigate the space.

Green Anchor

Green Anchor

THE LIVE-IN KITCHEN serves as a central gathering point and connects directly to the outdoors, marking patients’ first interaction with the space. Green materials are used to enhance the natural atmosphere and create a seamless transition to the outdoor environment. This area is also designed to accommodate visitors, offering a welcoming spot to share a snack or coffee with loved ones.

The panel board on the wall is designed to offer a multi-sensory, interactive experience for residents. Some sections function as whiteboards and blackboards for writing or drawing, while others feature screens displaying calming visuals or daily activity schedules. Additional panels include integrated lighting elements and noise-cancelling materials to enhance comfort and engagement.

Live-in Custom Kitchen

Blue Freedom

THE ACTIVITIES ROOM serves as a social space designed to create a sense of community among residents. It supports a variety of cognitive activities aimed at helping manage their condition. Residents can engage in art therapy, like painting or creating with their hands, as well as play memory-boosting games or enjoy films and live performances. These therapies have been shown to stimulate memory and enhance overall well-being.

Red Movement

THE PHYSIOTHERAPY ROOM is designed to provide residents with a space to move their bodies, improve specific physical functions based on their needs, and even participate in group classes with others. Physical activity has been shown to enhance not only strength and mobility, making daily tasks easier, but also to support mental health and improve sleep quality.

The use of red in the space is intentional, as it is known to stimulate energy and increase engagement among patients.
